Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit



Vijaya Lakshmi Nehru Pandit, an Indian diplomat and politician was born in the year 1900. She became the 1st lady President of the UN (United Nations) General Assembly and 1st women to hold a Cabinet post in Indian Government. She wedded Ranjit Sitaram Pandit in the year 1921.
Pandit was an unsympathetic reviewer of her niece, Indira Gandhi subsequent to Gandhi becoming PM in the year 1966. Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit retired from active politics, after relations with her niece soured and moved to Dehradun. She was chosen as the Indian representative to the UN Human Rights Commission in the year 1979, subsequent to which she retired from public life.
