The famous Arattu festival is held annually at the Janardhanaswamy Temple at Varkala, Kerala. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The festival is celebrated in Meenam (March- April) and lasts for 10 days. It starts with flag hoisting on Karthika day and wind up with Arattu on Uthram day. A colourful procession led by elephants decorated with peacock fans and ornamental silk umbrellas is a prominent highlight of this festival. |

More than ten thousand people gather everyday to attend this colourful festival. Another important attraction of this festival is the Kathakali dance that is performed whole night on the fourth and fifth day of the festival. |
