The Ellora Caves



The Ellora caves, also known as 'Verul Leni' is located 30 km northwest of Aurangabad, Maharashtra. It is one of the largest rock-cut monastic temples in the world. The caves of Ellora are also famous worldwide for being the largest monolithic excavation. The channels through which once lava flowed can be sited here. These caves are listed in the World Heritage Sites in India.


At Ellora, there are 34 caves out of which 17 are dedicated to Hinduism, 12 to Buddhism and 5 to Jainism. These caves reflect a unique blend of these three faiths. Excellent craftsmanship, paintings and sculptors depicting the lifestyle of that era are some of the major highlights of these caves.
