Swathi Thirunal



Sri Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma, Maharaja of the state of Travancore was born on April 16th 1813 in India. From the time span of 1813 up to 1829, he reigned under the regency of his mother Maharani Gowri Lakshmi Bayi (1813-1815) and his aunt Maharani Gowri Parvati Bayi (1815-1829). Subsequent to becoming a a major in the year 1829, he assumed full powers as a ruler till his death in the year 1846.
He was a connoisseur of music and a well-versed musician himself. Swathi Thirunal is said to extend patronage to both Hindustani as well as Carnatic music. Over 400 compositions in Carnatic and Hindustani styles of music are accredited to him. Besides music, he was fluent in several languages inclusive of Sanskrit, Malayalam, Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, Bengali, Tamil, Kannada, Oriya as well as English.
