Subramanya Bharathi



Subramania Bharati, a Tamil poet, reformer as well as independence fighter from Tamil Nadu was born on December 11th, 1882. He is also tagged with the laudatory epithet as Mahakavi Bharati owing to his great contribution to literature. He was well-adept in both prose and poetry forms. His compositions were directed to arouse the masses in the region of South India to support the Indian independence movement.
His contemporaries’ constituted Indian Independence movement leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Sri Aurobindo, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, as well as V.V.S.Aiyar.

He received education at a local high school referred to as ‘The M.D.T. Hindu College’. At a very tender age is began learning music and at the age of 11 years, he was invited to a conference of Ettayapuram, wherein the court poets as well as the musicians composing poems and songs. In fact, it is from which place, that is gained the title of Bharathi or Goddess of Learning.
