Shankaracharya Temple



The Shankaracharya Temple was built by Jalauka, the son of Emperor Ashoka in and around 200 B.C. It is a beautiful Shiva temple built on the Gopadari Hill on the south east of Srinagar. This temple showcases the early life of Kashmir and tries to introduce the initial Sihara style. One can find some of the early specimens of horse shoes arch in this temple. The temple stands on a solid rock and consists of an octagonal basement of 13 layers. The body of the temple is surrounded by a terrace enclosed by a stone wall.
The entire temple is build of stone that is laid throughout in horizontal courses. The name of the temple owns its origin to the Shankaracharya, the great philosopher who visited the valley about ten centuries ago and looked after the temple.
