Rani Lakshmi Bai

Rani Lakshmi Bai, also known as Rani of Jhansi was the queen of the Maratha-ruled princely state of Jhansi in North India. She was a symbol of resistance to British rule in India and was a leading figure of the Indian rebellion of 1857. She was born around 1828 in the city of Varanasi. At the age of 13, in 1842, she was married to Raja Gangadhar Rao Newalkar, and became the Maharani of Jhansi.
After the death of Maharaja Gangadhar Rao on 21 November 1853, Lord Dalhousie decided to annex the state of Jhansi under the Doctrine of Lapse. In January of 1858, the British Army started its advance on Jhansi, and in March laid siege to the city. She met her death on 17 June, 1858 during the battle for Gwalior.
