|Raja Rao was a prolific Indian writer, who wrote a number of English novels, short stories and many more. The works of this great writer exhibit deep roots of Hinduism. His semi-autobiographical novel, The Serpent and the Rope is a tale of searching for spiritual truth in India and Europe. This particular novel established him as one of the most excellent Indian stylists. He was born in a well known Brahmin family in Hassan, the state of Mysore situated in South India. He received education at Muslim schools in Hyderabad and the Aligarh Muslim University. Later on, he won scholarship to study abroad. He came back to India in 1939 and edited Changing India with Iqbal Singh. He was awarded with Padma Bhushan in 1969 for his immense contribution to literature and many other awards.
