Pongal |

Pongal is a harvest festival of Tamil Nadu. It is the celebrated by offering prayers to the Sun God, Earth and the cattle for the harvest they have reaped. It is held in the middle of January. The Pongal festival lasts for fours days. During these four days varieties of Rangoli are drawn in the houses, gifts are exchanged and varieties of dishes are prepared. |

Bhogi festival is the first day and is devoted in honour of Lord Indra. On the second day, ceremonial worship is performed by offering rice boiled in milk to the Sun God. Mettu pongal is the third day of Pongal that is associated with the worship of the cattle. On the fourth day, known as Kannum Pongal, people visit their friends and relatives to enjoy the festive season. |
