Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary



Periyar National Park is situated in the state of Kerala in South West part of India. It is spread over the area of 777 sq. km. and is famous for the large elephant population. The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1934. It was included into the Tiger Project in 1979.

In Periyar wildlife sanctuary 49 species of mammals, 265 species of birds, 36 species of reptiles, 12 species of amphibians, 35 species of fishes and 160 species of butterflies have been recognized so far. Some important mammals are tiger, leopard, elephant, gaur, sambar, wild dog, barking deer, lion tailed macaque and Nilgiri langur.

Some of the bird species that are found in the Periyar wildlife sanctuary include blue-winged parakeet, Nilgiri wood pigeon, white-bellied tree pie, laughing thrushes and flycatchers.
