Nirad C. Chaudhuri



Nirad C. Chaudhuri, a Bengali writer and commenter on culture was born on November 23rd 1897 in Kishoreganj, now in Bangladesh. He initiated his career working as a clerk in the Indian Army’s Accounting Department. He was also engaged with the editing of the then celebrated English and Bengali magazines such as ‘Modern Review’, ‘Sonibarer Chithi’, and ‘Probasi’. Chaudhuri was also instrumental in initiating two short-lived but extremely admired Bengali magazines, Notun Patrika as well as Samasamayik.
In the year 1932, he was wedded to Amiya Dhar and had 3 sons. Even his wife, Amiya was also a famous writer in her own style. Nirad went to England in the year 1995 with joint effort of British Council and the BBC, wherein he was asked to give his lectures. He has won several recognitions inclusive of the Duff Cooper Memorial Award. He was also honoured with the epithet ‘Commander of Order of the British Empire’ (CBE) by Okeene Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom.
