Indians got the first taste of cinema on 7 July, 1896, when Lumiere brothers unveiled six silent movies at the Watson hotel at Bombay. But it was Dadasaheb Phalke, who made a full length feature film on the life of Raja Harischandra and released it commercially in the year 1913. This was the era of silent movies.
The first sound film in India was Alam Ara directed by Ardeshir Irani in the year 1931. Since then, the Indian film industry has never looked back. Compared to regional film industry, the Hindi film industry is quite big. In fact it has the record of churning more films in a year.
