Mother Teresa



Mother Teresa was an Albanian-born Roman Catholic nun. She was born on August 26, 1910 and had Indian citizenship. In 1950, she founded the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata. She ministered the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying for more than forty years. In 1979, she was conferred with the Nobel Peace Prize and in 1980 she was honoured with the Bharat Ratna, for her humanitarian work.


The Missionaries of Charity founded by Mother Teresa continued to expand gradually and by the time of her death it was operating 610 missions in more than 123 countries. In 1996 April, she fell and broke her collar bone. On September 5, 1997, she died and was later beatified and given the title ‘Blessed Teresa of Calcutta’ by Pope John Paul II.
