Mihir Sen



Mihir Sen, a lawyer by profession, was an outstanding long-distance swimmer of India. He was born on November 16, 1930, in Purulia, West Bengal. He became the first Asian to swim the English Channel on September 27, 1958. In 1959, he was conferred the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan in 1967.


In 1966, he swam the seven seas of the five continents in one calendar year. In April he swam across the Palk Straits and in August he crossed the Straits of Gibraltar between Spain and Morocco. One month later, he became the world's first man to swim the Straits of Dardanelles. In that same year he also swam across the Bosphorus and the Panama Canal.
