Medha Patkar



Medha Patkar, born on December 1, 1954, is a renowned social activist of India. She left her studies in the midst and got involved herself actively in the agitations conducted by peasants of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. To protest against the decision to increase the height of the Narmada Dam by the authority, Medha went on hunger strike from March 28 to April 17, 2006.
Medha was arrested by police in West Bengal, on December 2, 2006, for her involvement in the protest against getting the hold of farmland. She has been conferred with several awards and honours. She was also a Commissioner to the World Commission on Dams.
