Makar Sankranti is one of the most auspicious days for the Hindus, and is celebrated all over the country with great devotion and dedication. Devotees take a dip in Ganga and pray to Lord Sun. It marks the shifting of the Sun in the Northern Hemisphere and is usually celebrated on January 14th every year. This festival marks the end of winter season. |

People pray to god and distribute food and clothes among the needy. Laddus of Jaggery and cashew nuts are prepared as the main food of the day. On this day many people prepare a rice dish known as 'Khichdi'. In some states, people fly kites to mark the occasion.
