Mahadevi Verma



Mahadevi Varma, born in the year 1907, is one of the most famous modern Hindi poets and is widely regarded as the 'modern Meera'. She was major poet of the Chhayavaad generation, a period of romanticism in Modern Hindi poetry. The main theme of her poetry is pain. 1982, she was awarded the Jnanpith award for her immense contribution to Hindi poetry.
Mahadevi was appointed as the first headmistress of Allahabad Mahila Vidyapeeth. The main aim of the institute was to imparting cultural and literary education to girls through Hindi medium. Later, she became the chancellor of the institute. She died on September 14, 1987 in her bungalow that still stands at Ashok Nagar colony in Allahabad.
