Lammergeier



The Lammergeier or Bearded Vulture is the only member of the genus Gypaetus. It is generally found in southern Europe, Africa, India and Tibet. These are huge and fearsome birds with exceptionally long, relatively narrow, pointed wings and a diamond-shaped tail.
It is a scavenger and feeds mostly up on the carcasses of dead animals.

This bird is 95-125 cm long with a wingspan of 235-280 cm. It weighs between 5 and 7 kg. The adult bird has a brownish yellow body and head. The tail and wings are grey in color. The young bird is dark all over, and takes five years to reach full maturity. Its average lifespan is around 40 years. It lives in mountainous regions.
