Kanyakumari Temple

Kanyakumari is the southernmost tip of the Indian mainland and often referred to as Cape Comorin for trade purposes. It is here that the Kanyakumari Temple is located which is dedicated to the virgin goddess Kanya Devi who is considered to be an incarnation of Goddess Parvati who was the wife of Lord Shiva.
It is a legend that Kanya Devi was to wed Lord Shiva but the Lord did not turn up for the wedding. So the marriage did not solemnise and the rice and cereals which were meant for the wedding were not cooked and they are still sold in the market in the form of stones that look exactly like rice and cereals. The males who want to visit the temple are required to remove their shirts before entering. The deity of the temple is seated facing east but the northern gates are used for entering the temple.
