Kalighat Kali Temple



The Kalighat Kali Temple which is Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Maa Kali is located on the banks of the Adi Ganga River in Calcutta. This temple is considered to be one of the 51 Shakti Peethas where the various parts of Sati’s body fell as mentioned in religious legends.
People from all over India irrespective of their sectarian differences come to this temple to worship Maa Kali who is considered to be a mother for humans. The temple is 200 years old in its present form. The original temple was a small hut which after that was replaced by a small temple by King Mansingha in early sixteenth century. The present temple was built under the patronage of Sabarna Roy Chowdhury family of Banisha and was completed in 1809. Also, the image of Kali that is placed here is unique and different from any other images of the goddess.
