Jawaharlal Nehru



Jawaharlal Nehru was one of the major and notable political leaders of the Congress Party and a key figure in the Indian independence movement. He was born on November 14, 1889 and is popularly referred to as Panditji (Scholar) and Pandit Nehru. He was the first Prime Minister of India and on August 15, 1947, he raised the flag of independent India in New Delhi.

Nehru was a passionate advocate of education for youth and children and considered it essential for the future progress of the country.  Under him, the Indian parliament enacted several changes to the Hindu law criminalise caste discrimination and increased the legal rights and social freedoms of women. He led the Congress to a major victory in the 1957 elections. He passed away on May 27, 1964.
