Guru Purab



Guru purab, also known as Jyototsava, is one of the sacred festival of the Sikhs. In a year, 10 guru purabs are celebrated. Each one of it is considered to be auspicious, but special importance is given to the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak who was believed to have brought enlightenment to the world. Therefore, this festival is also known as the festival of light.
Guru Purab falls in the month of October-November. To celebrate Guru Purab, early morning religious procession goes around singing hymns. One of the integral parts of the procession is carrying the holy book, Guru Granth Sahib. Community feast are organised and people light oil lamps and candles and some even burst crackers.
