|Gopinath Bordoloi was the first Chief Minister of Assam and a prominent freedom fighter. He considered the Gandhian principle of non violence a potent political tool. .after graduating from the well-known Scottish Church College, Calcutta, he joined the Indian National Congress. His biggest political clash came in 1946-47, when politicians belonging to the Muslim League tried to embrace the Hindu Assam in to the Muslim-majority. He organized protest in a way to thwart communal riots and preserved the territorial integrity of Assam with the Union of India. After Independence, he worked in close association with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, in order to secure the independence of Assam against China, as well as East Pakistan. He was conferred with the Bharat Ratna posthumously.
