Dr. Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar



Dr. Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar was a notable scientist of India. He was born on 21 February 1894 at Shahpur now in Pakistan. After receiving his DSc from the University College, London in 1921, he returned to India. At Benaras Hindu University he was awarded with a professorship. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society on March 18, 1943.
Under the chairmanship of Dr. Bhatnagar, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research was established and he was appointed as its first director general. In the following years, he set up 12 national laboratories like Central Food Processing Technological Institute at Mysore, National Chemical Laboratory at Pune and many more. He passed away on 1 January 1955.
