Chandrashekhar Azad

Chandra Shekhar Azad was born on 23 July 1906 in village Bhavra in Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh. At a very young age he was quite fascinated by the upsurge of non-violent and non-cooperation movement under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. In 1926, he joined the Hindustan Socialist Republican Army (HSRA) and got involved in the several conspiracies against British rule.

On 27 February 1931 well armed police surrounded him in the Alfred Park, Allahabad, when he was betrayed by one of his informer. The police ordered him to surrender, but he held them at a bay single-handedly for some time. Left with only one bullet and foreseeing no means of escape, he shot himself in his head.
