Cellular Jail |

The Cellular Jail is located in Port Blair and is symbolic of the hardships faced by the Indians in their attempt to get freedom. The jail is famous for the inhuman treatment given to the prisoners by the jail officials. The construction of the prison started in 1896 and was completed in 1906.

The Jail had seven wings and each of the wings had three storeys. There were in total 698 cells. Each cell was 4.5 meters in length and 2.7 meters in breadth with a ventilator located at a height of three meters.
The prisoners were tormented and subjected to most inhuman treatment. In 1942 during World War II, the Japanese forces captured the island and freed the Indian prisoners. |
