Baijnath Temple

On the banks of the Gomti River in Bageshwar district of Uttarakhand is located a Shiv temple which is one of the twelve Jyothirlingas of the deity and this temple is called the Baijnath temple. This temple was constructed in 1204 AD by two local merchants Ahuka and Manyuka. Before the construction of this temple, there was already a temple at the same place and this is said by the inscriptions that are made in the porch of the temple.
In this temple is enshrined a Svayambhu form of Sivalinga which means that it had arisen from itself. The temple is made in the Nagara style of temple architecture which is seen the early medieval north Indian temples. Special occasions are celebrated here with great zeal and splendour like Mahashivratri, Makar Sakranti, Vaisakha Sankranti etc.
