Baba Amte



Baba Amte, born on December 26, 1914, was a follower of the Gandhian philosophy and led a Spartan life. He was one of the notable and most respectable social activists of India. He founded several ashrams, especially for the rehabilitation and treatment of the leprosy patient and the disabled.
Environmental awareness, wildlife preservation and the Narmada Bachao Andolan were some of the other social causes for which Baba Amte devoted his life. For his fight against leprosy, he was conferred with the title of Abhayasadhak, the fearless aspirant, by Gandhi. Baba Amte won numerous national as well as international awards during his lifetime. In 2007, he was diagnosed with leukaemia and on February 9, 2008 he passed away in Anandwan.
