Ashoka

Ashoka was the greatest emperors who ruled the Maurya Dynasty from 273 BC to 232 BC. He was born on 304 BC and was one of the most famous Mauryan kings and the greatest rulers of India. The city of Pataliputra, modern day Patna, was the capital of his empire. The emblem that was excavated from his empire is today recognised as India’s national emblem.

After being crowned as the king, Ashoka decided to annex Kalinga (Orissa) into his kingdom. This was the first and last battle fought by Ashoka. After witnessing the mass death of the war, he swore that he would never wage war again. He took up Buddhism and religiously followed the principles of it. He died in 232 BC.
