Aruna Asaf Ali



Aruna Asaf Ali was a famous freedom fighter of India. She was born on July 16, 1909 at Kalka in Haryana. In 1928, she joined the Congress Party and actively participated in the Salt Satyagraha movement. In 1931 she was arrested and was imprisoned at the Tihar Jail in 1932. There she launched a hunger strike to protest against the apathetic treatment to the political prisoners.
Aruna Asaf Ali was honoured with the International Lenin Peace Prize in the year 1964. She passed away on 29th July, 1996. The Government of India awarded her the Bharat Ratna, posthumously in 1997. In her memory, Dr Aruna Asaf Ali Sadbhawana Award is being distributed annually by All India Minorities Front.
