Annapurna Devi



Annapurna Devi (Roshanara Khan), bass sitar maestro was born in Maihar, in the year 1926 to Ustad Allauddin Khan. She married Pandit Ravi Shankar (disciple of Allauddin Khan as well as sitar maestro himself) at the age of 14 years, and it was then that she converted to Hinduism and Maharaja of Maihar renamed her Annapurna. The wedlock came to an end after a span of 20 years.
She has received several awards and felicitation inclusive of Padma Bhushan, Deshikottam (honorary doctorate from Visva-Bharati University). Annapurna Devi did not incline towards taking music as her profession but has no recorded except those secretly recorded by music lovers. She has been the Professor of Music at Centre for Performing Arts and a prominent figure of Acharya Alauddin Circle.
