Amarnath Temple



The Amarnath temple is located in caves in Jammu Kashmir and it is one of the most famous of the Hindu temples. The pilgrimage to the Amarnath Caves opens up for 2 months from May to August in the summers according Hindu calendar and a manifestation of Lord Shiva is worshipped in these caves.
An ice Lingam forms in these caves every year and it is actually a stalagmite which resembles the Shiva-Linga that is worshipped here. The place is considered to be around 5000 years old and every year in the summer festival time that takes place in the area, around 400,000 pilgrims come and visit these caves. The pilgrimage entails a 45 km journey on foot or horse back from town of Pahalgam which is located about 96 km from Srinagar. However, to take up the pilgrimage prior permission has to be sought from Indian government as this place is under threat of terrorism and is in control of the Indian Army.
