The Ajanta caves, located 100 km away from Aurangabad, in the Indian state of Maharashtra, are among the most significant Buddhist caves of India. Listed in the World Heritage Sites in India, the Ajanta caves dates back to the 2nd century BC. There are about 30 caves at Ajanta that consist of chaitya-grihas and monasteries. The caves were first discovered in 1819 AD. The painting and sculptures that are found inside the caves depicts about Buddhist culture and history. |
