Abdul Ghaffar Khan



Abdul Ghaffar Khan, a Pashtun Indian political and spiritual leader was born in Peshawar in the year 1890. He was known for his non-violent opposition towards the British Rule in India. He was also fondly known as Badshah Khan, Bacha Khan, Sarhaddi Gandhi, and Frontier Gandhi. Khan was also chosen for the Nobel peace prize in the year 1985. In fact, he became the 1st non-citizen to receive the Bharat Ratna in the year 1987.
In time, Ghaffar Khan's goal came to be the formulation of a united, independent, secular India. In order to achieve this end, he established the Khudai Khidmatgar or Red Shirts in the1920s.  He was a strong supporter of women's rights as well as nonviolence. In the year 1969, ‘My life and struggle: Autobiography of Badshah Khan’ was published.

He died in Peshawar while he was under house arrest in the year1988, and was buried in Jalalabad.
